Morgans Timber- The Future of Timber is Green

Apr 30, 2021 | Press Releases

Daire McLoughlin of Morgans Timber highlights the importance of sustainable timber in Irish construction

The use of timber in construction dates back to the earliest settlements and is the only building material in the world that can be grown. However, over the last number of decades, the timber industry has experienced a huge change in response to the growing emphasis on sustainability in construction. While wood is a natural, renewable, and sustainable material for building it is important that it is sourced responsibly to ensure there is no negative impact on the environment.

Here at Morgans Timber, we have seen an incredible shift towards sustainability, not only within the markets in which we trade but also the customers that we serve. Environmental responsibility is one of the most important elements of our offering, and at a time of global climate issues, we are operating in an industry that has every opportunity to be sustainable.

Daire, Morgans Timber

As the first FSC certified company within Chadwicks Group, we are committed to applying best-in-class practices and technological innovations to provide customers with premium quality and ethically sourced products.  The FSC is an international not-for-profit organisation that promotes the responsible management of the world’s forests.

Sustainable timber involves harvesting wood and timber products from responsibly managed and continuously replenished forests. It ensures that there is no damage to the surrounding environment or to native flora and fauna and that all trees cut down are replenished by younger trees so that there is no negative impact on the environment. These young trees absorb more carbon than trees at the end of their life cycle, therefore it is more beneficial for the environment for these to be harvested and removed.

At Morgans Timber, our ambition is not to just cater to the industry in five or 10 years’ time but to futureproof for 100 years’ time. We believe it’s our responsibility to set out the correct practices now, so that future generations can continue to enjoy this way of life in years to come. We don’t just want to be part of a greener world, we want to make sure it happens.

While Ireland has traditionally been regarded as a masonry-intensive industry, there has been an increased interest in using more timber and wood-based materials in builds throughout the country in recent years. With more consideration on naturally renewable materials such as timber, Morgans Timber believes that the future is hopeful for sustainable construction – not only to ensure the continuous growth of the industry but also to protect the communities in which it operates.
